Moving Made Easy: Preparing to Move

The time has come to sell your home and transition to a new place… the list of to-do’s seems endless. We’ve put together our top tips and recommendations for pre-staging and an organized move to prepare you for this time of change and keep your sanity!

Moving presents a great opportunity to purge. Now is the time to get rid of items you don’t plan to use in your new home. We recommend pulling everything out and categorizing your items so you can see what you have to help you determine what you need. If you haven’t used something for a year, you probably don’t need it - donate it or throw it out. Do the same for duplicates. If it’s damaged or broken…toss it.

Pre-pack off-season items and clothing, as well as any small decor items and personal mementos; this will help make closets/rooms appear more spacious.

TIP: Pack and label boxes according to where you want them in your new home (ie. “Playroom”, etc.)

Once you’re organized, you can prepare for staging…

  • Tidy and organize closets and pantries.

  • Edit the home of any personal art, family photos, children’s art, etc.

  • Ensure switch plates, knobs/hardware, and lightbulbs are the same colour/type - change those that are not.

  • Remove any screens on windows you don’t open - screens can dull natural light in a room by up to 10%!

  • Touch-up paint where required (ie. door trim and baseboards in high traffic areas). Repaint rooms and walls that are not neutral colours or those that damaged, stained, etc.

  • Keep any artwork, mirrors, large vases or decorative accessories accessible - a stager might want to use them.

PLAN: For the first week your home is listed send pets to a family or friend’s and consider staying elsewhere for the first few days - this keeps the house in perfect condition. A well-staged, neat home will draw constant showings and better offers!
