Welcome Home: Curb Appeal

Curb appeal is everything… The exterior of your home sets the tone for guests’ or buyers’ expectations when they step through the front door. Make your home stand out! We’re outlining our top tips to boost your home’s curb appeal to create a cohesive style from outside in.

1.   Tidy Up the Landscape

Start by cutting back any overgrown plants and maintain your lawn (both for the health of your grass and to keep your yard looking cared for!). We recommend planting only what you can maintain. If you’re not one with a green thumb, consider flowers and plants in pots or planters - they’re easier to swap out, water and keep tidy. You may also want to consider drought-tolerant perennials such as Russian sage, bougainvillea, or bayberry. Whereas if you enjoy gardening, beautifully planted flower beds around the entry area or along the pathway leading to your front door will create a welcoming walk up to the front door.

2.  Update the Front Door

A fresh coat of paint goes a long way! Something bold that contrasts your home’s exterior and trim will make your front door pop! For a door that’s feeling dated, an easy and affordable tip… upgrade your hardware. Look for the same colour or metal finish for all your outdoor accessories, such as entrance hardware, numbers, and mailbox, for a cohesive look.

3.  Consider Lighting

Lighting is essential for both convenience and safety… illuminating pathways and the front door are important for accessibility and establishing an inviting environment. Consider motion-sensing lighting near the front door for added security.

4.  Get Creative with your House Number

Your front entry should not only be appealing but should be functional, how are guests going to find you if your house number doesn’t stand out? Consider backlighting, a screen, or a panel beside the front door for a creative touch. No matter the surface the numbers are mounted on, contrast is key - make sure they do not disappear into the background - on a darker door consider light colours or a bright metal finish. Ensure the numbers are a minimum of 4 inches high to be seen from the street and the font is legible.

5.  Make it Welcoming

Planters or seasonal wreaths and beautifully layered doormats are perfect for an entry of any size. If you have a larger front porch, this is a great opportunity to add a landing spot; think about adding a couple chairs with a side table between, a bench, or installing a porch swing for an extra “home-y” feel.
